Bio

Julian is most passionate about music as a universal language, allowing him to collaborate in many avenues, such as creating and performing original songs, scores for movies, commercials, video games, podcasts, and arrangements for orchestras, combos, and vocalists. Being a native of Los Angeles has given him access to wide-ranging, diverse cultures. As a multi-instrumentalist, he is able to collaborate across many music genres inclusive of many people. He embraces learning new technologies, driving positive change and transforming his creative artistry to give wider access and collaboration across borders and genres to the stories shared through my music.

Along with his creative and instrumental skills, Julian is very skilled in composing, music notation, and team collaboration, a necessity for success in making harmonious music that effectively reaches audiences gained from my many ensemble and orchestra performances. His leadership in founding a jazz trio developed skills for curating repertoire, networking, managing talent, rehearsals, and booking, promoting, and publicizing gigs. Experience as a sound studio intern honed his wide-ranging music knowledge to anticipate the needs of commercial and podcast clients using existing music and creating custom scores and arrangements. He also became skilled at compilation, organization, and responsibility for data file management.

Through his education and work experience, he's gained many skills, including songwriting, arranging, composition, Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, recording, performance, music notation/theory, sight singing, ear training, and playing piano/keyboard. He's proficient in MS Word, Excel, Mac Pages, Adobe Acrobat, and file-sharing platforms such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Sites, Docs and Sheets, Icloud, Vimeo, and YouTube.

Julian has a widely varied musical history from years of studying music with private lessons, Thornton School at USC, Colburn School, and Santa Monica College, and music summer camps at Stanford and NYU. He has also worked in music production and recording at private recording studios in Los Angeles as a summer intern and has worked in music production at the Carson Center at USC.

He’s currently a sophomore in the jazz studies program at Thornton School of Music at USC where he has performed as pianist with the Concert Jazz Orchestra directed by Jon Hatamiya, the Thornton Jazz Orchestra directed by Bob Mintzer, the Michael Stever jazz combo, and the Katie Thiroux jazz combo. He has performed with his trio around Los Angeles, with the Colburn Big Band Jazz ensemble at the Catalina Jazz Club and with the Santa Monica College Vocal Jazz Ensemble at the Broad. He was a semi-finalist for jazz piano in the Spotlight competition in 2022, competing against several thousand performers, and won a Downbeat award while playing with the Miles Ahead Jazz Big Band at Stanford Jazz.

Mentors include jazz pianist luminaries Chris Dawson, Josh Nelson, Tamir Hendelman, and Taylor Eigsti.

Julian's career goals include learning about all aspects of the music industry. He would also like to teach and share with younger students of all levels from diverse backgrounds about music, jazz, and piano skills. Other interests include traveling, martial arts, long-distance backpacking, researching music roots and history, curating playlists for friends, and volunteering in his community.
